Understanding Polyvagal Theory & PhysioCam
training with deb dana
PhysioCam is grounded in principles from Polyvagal Theory, a framework developed by Stephen Porges to help us better understand the nervous system and how it responds to safety, stress, connection, and overwhelm.
Rather than viewing our responses as simply “calm” or “anxious,” Polyvagal Theory helps us understand how the nervous system shifts between different states, influencing how we feel, think, relate, and respond in the moment.
PhysioCam uses facial scanning technology to help make subtle nervous system shifts more visible in real time. While you do not need formal Polyvagal training to begin using PhysioCam, many clinicians find it helpful to deepen their understanding of Polyvagal Theory in order to feel more confident interpreting patterns and supporting curiosity around the readings.
To support this, we have included a selection of training resources from Deb Dana, one of the world’s leading voices in translating Polyvagal Theory into practical therapeutic work.

Accompanying Resources
Completing a Personal Profile Map
A guide to autonomic mapping, helping clients safely explore ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal states, while understanding how these states shape beliefs, behaviours, and felt experience.
Personal Profile Map (Blank Template)
A practical mapping tool to help clients explore different nervous system states and identify patterns of safety, mobilisation, and shutdown.
Vagal Brake Exercise
A practical Polyvagal exercise from Deb Dana designed to help build regulation and resilience through understanding and intentionally engaging the “vagal brake.”
